ElevenLabs Credits: How Many Characters Per Plan (and How Not to Run Out)

ElevenLabs is the AI voice synthesis tool that has grown the most in the last two years โ€” and for good reason: it produces voices that in many cases are indistinguishable from a real human recording. But its credit system can create unpleasant surprises if you don't understand how it works.

How ElevenLabs credits work

Unlike other platforms that charge per second of generated audio, ElevenLabs charges per character of text. Every character of the text you convert to voice โ€” including spaces and punctuation โ€” consumes credits.

The official formula: Credits = characters ร— model rate

Model rates: - Standard model: 1 credit per character - Flash model: 0.5 credits per character

1 credit = 1 character โ‰ˆ 0.2 words (in English)

Credits consumed per content type

Content Approx. characters Credits (Standard) Credits (Flash)
Short post 280 characters 280 cr 140 cr
1 min narration ~900 characters 900 cr 450 cr
5 min YouTube video ~4,500 characters 4,500 cr 2,250 cr
20 min podcast ~18,000 characters 18,000 cr 9,000 cr
1 hour audiobook ~54,000 characters 54,000 cr 27,000 cr

ElevenLabs plans

Plan Price/month Credits included Equivalent
Free $0 10,000 cr ~10 min narration
Starter $5 30,000 cr ~30 min narration
Creator $11 121,000 cr ~120 min narration
Pro $22 500,000 cr ~500 min narration
Scale $99 2,000,000 cr ~2,000 min narration

Standard vs Flash: quality and consumption difference

The Standard model produces ElevenLabs' highest quality voice โ€” the most natural-sounding, with better emotional intonation. Recommended for: - Podcasts and audiobooks - Brand video narrations - Content where vocal quality is a differentiator

The Flash model consumes half the credits for the same text and generates audio faster. The quality difference is noticeable in long audio but minor in short clips. Good for: - Prototypes and drafts - Content where audio is secondary - High-volume production where cost is the priority

Credits expire: what most people don't know

ElevenLabs monthly credits do not roll over to the next month. If you have 30,000 credits left at month end on the Creator plan, you lose them.

Practical solution: if you regularly end the month with leftover credits, downgrade โ€” the lower plan probably covers your real usage. If you regularly run out mid-month, upgrade.

How to calculate how many credits you need

  1. Count the characters in your typical monthly text output (use any online character counter)
  2. Multiply by 1 (Standard) or 0.5 (Flash)
  3. Add a 20% buffer for regenerations and adjustments
  4. Find the plan that covers that amount

Example: if you produce 3 YouTube videos of 8 minutes each per month, your text is approximately 3 ร— 7,200 = 21,600 characters. With Standard you need 21,600 credits + 20% buffer = ~26,000 credits. The Creator plan (121,000 cr) covers you with plenty of room.

Tips to optimize consumption

Use Flash for first drafts. Generate the draft with Flash (0.5 cr/character), approve the content, and only regenerate the final version with Standard (1 cr/character).

Remove filler words from your script. Words like "basically," "right," "you know" add characters without adding value. Review the script before converting to voice.

Don't add decorative punctuation. Some creators add ellipses or extra commas to control pacing. Every extra character adds up. Better to use ElevenLabs' speed control tool instead.
